These are the first 3 artworks in the new series "Jumpsuits & Stagewear".
“Jumpsuits & Stagewear” is a new series of Artworks. A total of 126 (!)
Every work is 14 x 19 cm. There will be a drawing of every Suit Elvis wore between 1968 and 1977 during his Shows.
The Drawings are made with Pencil, Watercolor and Colored Pencil.

I finally found al the reference photos for the "Elvis 24" project. One for every year, from 1954 to 1977. You can see them all on the picture above. The color pictures are the finished paintings. I started working on the next 10 portraits.

A little update. I wrote that i was going to finish the background first ... but i couldn't resist starting with the clothes :-)

I applied the first color layer on the background. I'm going to finish the background before i start on the rest (exept some glazing coats). I learned it like this; 1. Background, 2. Skin, 3. Clothing and 4. Hair.

I applied two layers of Zinc White and Raw Umber. One or two more layers and then i can start with color!!!

After all the research, taking pictures and making sketches i finally started with the underpainting. I applied the first layers of Zinc White and Raw Umber. Many layers will follow before i can start with color....

A while back i made a small Elvis portrait, size 6 x 6". After finishing that one i got the idea to make 24 small Elvis portraits, one for every year of his career. The first one from 1954 and the last one from 1977. When i finish them all i'm going to make a special frame where they all fit in.

Project Elvis #9a, Masterdrawing

The materdrawing is done. I made a drawing on tracing paper by using a grid. Where it was necessary i changed the clothing. When i was satisfied with the drawing i made the definitive lines red with a Fine-liner so that i can still see them when the backside is made black with graphite to transfer the drawing to the canvas.

I started with a detailed drawing the same size as the painting. In this drawing I will solve problems with lighting and implement the clothes I sketched earlier. When the drawing is finished I will transfer it on the canvas. My desk is too small for the drawing, I started on the floor but my back didn't agree :-)

In this sketch I changed the 2008 jacket, shirt and tie to a Sixties outfit.
I'm going to take a good look at the heads, maybe i'm going to replace them one more time. Then i finaly can start with the live sized drawing!!

I choose different clothing for the "Fifties Elvis". I thought that the clothes i choose before are a bit dark. I picked the light striped coat that you see a lot on photos of Elvis from the Fifties.
I'm working on a rough sketch for the Sixties and when that is finished i'm going to start on a exact live sized drawing which i can transfer to the canvas.

I started another big Elvis project. 24 portraits, size 6" x 6" with oil paint. I got the idea for this project from my first small Elvis portrait. The first painting will be from 1954 and the last from 1977. When they are all done i'm going to build a special frame where they fit all in. I started on the underpaintings for the portraits from 1955, 1966 en 1968.

A rough sketch of Elvis in the 50's. I'm not satisfied with the shirt. I'll have to dive into Elvis' closet (books) once more to look for something else. Maybe also a jacket with a bit more color.

Today i made some pictures for a temporary lay-out of the painting.I made a very quick montage, just to see what it looks like. The clothes are not the clothes i'm going to use on the painting, they are from the different periods. The heads are also not definitive. The proportions are o.k. The background is one of the pictures of Gracelend i took in 2007.
The next step wil be to find pictures of the Elvis heads and clothes i do want to use.

The first step is to scan some pictures of a standing Elvis. On that scan i put on lines for the proportions that i can transfer to the photos of my model and adjust it in Photoshop.

For a while i'm thinking about a big painting, 80 x 120 cm, of 3 x Elvis. I don't want to use 3 pictures from books or the net but make photographs of a model in different positions. After that i'll have to find pictures of Elvis clothing from the fifties, sixties and seventies to paint on my models.
